YES, I'm a believer

It's Time for Christians to Face Their Fear About Kanye West

11/1/2019

Could it be that Kanye West is stepping into the awareness of his life's purpose? These erratic, emphatic moments seem to bear the hallmarks of someone who is experiencing "The Big Transformation" right before our eyes. In my new book, "The Journey to Genesis: A Discovery of Your Created Purpose", I share what this transformation looked like for the Apostle Paul, the demoniac, the woman at the well in John 4 and people like myself.

Picture
Kanye West is no stranger to controversy and his latest album and recent round of interviews are further proof of that. The controversy? You name it! West’s conversion is a hot topic of conversation, but so are his remarks about slavery, his hypocritical stance on the sins one engaged in, unbridled support of President Trump, his seemingly role as a church leader---the list goes on! However, believers have taken issue with and are the main skeptics scoffing at West’s admission of his recent confession of Christ. Earlier this year and in anticipation of last week’s release “Jesus Is King,” West assembled singers and musicians in remote locations for what has been since billed as “Sunday Service.” The invitation only service featured classic gospel songs and remakes of popular secular songs each week. The services initially went on without any preaching but as of late, preaching has been added to the service setup.

At its worst, “Jesus Is King” is a guilty pleasure you can feel good about
Picture
While the concept is wildly popular among music lovers of all ages, this is also troubling for believers and rightfully so. Over the years, we’ve seen the popular public figure profess Christ only to return to their former life when living out the conversion became difficult or simply banal in lieu of partying and riotous living. Both skeptics and defenders of West’s transformation bolster their points with scripture. The trouble is not West’s posture, but his platform as he attempts to work through this transformation. Even believers in support of the shift believe that he is a danger to himself and his sphere of influence without guidance. Earlier this week, Rolling Stone highlighted West’s relationship with Warryn Campbell a producer, label executive and pastor.

Those comparing West to the Apostle Paul could probably benefit from another glance at Paul’s transformation. After his sight was restored by Ananias he was in Arabia for three years (Galatians 1:18) and a total of fourteen years between his trips to Jerusalem following his first missionary journey (Galatians 2:1,9). West may have surrendered his life, but has yet to surrender his international platform, which is undoubtedly the reason for the skepticism. What he is doing which leads me back to a story in the bible I believe will help provide understanding.

We aren’t all Paul, but we can all be Ananias

Nothing worse than a hypocrite. Change? He ain't really different!
He ain't even try to get permission. Asked for advice and they dissed him.
Said I'm finna do a gospel album. What you been hearing from the Christians.
They'll be the first ones to judge me, make it feel like nobody love me...
-Kanye West, Hands On

In Mark 5:1-20 we discover a man who lived in the tombs, cut himself and was full of unclean spirits. When the man saw Jesus, he ran and worshiped Him, and in that moment, unclean spirits were cast out of him. The people who saw not only the miracle but that the man was later “clothed and in his right mind” responded by driving Jesus out of the region.

The man wanted to go with Jesus, but Jesus told him to stay in the region and instead “go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.” When Jesus returned, there was a crowd awaiting Him including Jairus whose daughter He raised from the dead (v22) and the woman with the issue of blood who followed behind (v34). I often look at this passage and wonder what would have happened had the man commonly referred to in his former state as a “demoniac” not told his region about what the Lord had done for him. Jairus’ daughter may have died, and the woman may have never gotten the remedy she sought, not to mention the other miracles that were by-products of his testimony.

Do you ever stop to think about whose transformation you are beneficiary of or who’s salvation testimony yours is tied to? The testimonies are already pouring in from people about the change people are experiencing in their lives watching West and listening to his “Jesus Is King” album. But, what if this is another instance of fool’s gold? Are believers no longer judging supposed trees of righteousness by the fruit they bear? Only time will tell. Some believers have spent time praying that God shut Kanye West down and others are asking God to increase the reach of his platform. But I suggest that when you pray, change the subject! Remember to thank God for the big transformation in your life. Thank Him again that He had compassion on you and accepted you how you were, where you were when you came to him.
Following the death of his mother, many like myself prayed that West would heal from the trauma of his mother’s tragic, untimely death. He worked through it publicly and many were afraid for him, fearing that the world had lost the creative genius known as Kanye forever. I’m sure many thought that the demoniac who slept naked in the tombs was also lost forever, until his encounter with Jesus. It was then that he was more frightful than ever (Mark 5:15)!

We must do the hard work of trying to understand God and not Kanye. The reality that God just may be in it after all is frightening.  But, it’s time we face our worst fears about even Kanye West…that God can change and use anybody!

The BIG Transformation (excerpted from "The Journey to Genesis, A Discovery of Your Created Purpose"

Picture
On the journey to Genesis, one issue we will constantly battle is moving from who we once were to who we are becoming. Understand that who God is calling forth is not who you or even the world around you knows. The man that emerges on the journey is a shock even to himself! This happens through what I like to call the BIG transformation. God transforms us, and we conform to His idea of who we are. One of my many faults as a believer was that I understood the transformative work of God through scripture, yet I lacked a conformative response. If we will be who God is calling forth, we will have to first yield to it, then cause others to respond to our response to God.

. We all have a past and a history of small living before the Lord lifted us! People will try to imprison you with your past before they ever acknowledge your big transformation! Still, run on and don’t let that keep you in hiding! Ever wonder why “they” are around before and after the big transformation? Consider Lazarus. Jesus interrupted mourning to raise him from the dead.

You mean Lazarus died so that “they” (the multitude gathered at the grave) might believe that Jesus was sent from God? Your big transformation is not for you only! “They” were also at the foot of the sycamore tree and saw Jesus summon Zacchaeus the publican down from the tree as they murmured about it. At the foot of the tree, “they” saw him restored as a son of Abraham. Your journey to Genesis transforms you, and it’s somewhat impractical to think that it would do otherwise! Your journey to Genesis won’t leave you the same and will change not only you but the world around you, all for the glory of the Lord. “They” saw and knew you before your journey, but if they could only see you now…Bigger and Better! Get ready to come out of that dark place; you’ve been hiding long enough! Jesus calling Zacchaeus down from the tree perfectly illustrated how great God is as “a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.”

In the case of the demoniac and so many of us, only Jesus can make our mess our message! Are you afraid of “them” and what “they” have to say? Fear not. God wants to show you off knowing that in turn, you will show Him off to the world around you. Have you considered sharing your big transformation with your world? One of the greatest and most often overlooked transformations is the woman at the well. The woman in John 4:29 told the town to “Come see a man…” The impact of just one…that’s BIG! Thank God for His big transformation in our lives.

I Choose Judas!

You many never believe it, but it's true! Go with me to the Gethsemane and let's look at this revelation.
Matthew 26:36-46

Picture
Of all the disciples, there are only two that are more commonly referred to: Judas and Peter. They were nothing alike but both are much more common through the lens of an archetypal illustration. If I were on the court of destiny, for the BIG game, I'd be sure to add Judas to my team! Peter is the disciple I've always thought I would need the most, but after some deep thought recently, I've discovered a revelation of Judas' integral role in Jesus' destiny!

Peter is the disciple most people want in their corner. He's the rough and tumble ride or die friend. In fact, his carnality earned him numerous rebukes from the Lord, Himself. Still, he remains a fan-favorite, of sorts.

In Gethsemane, Peter removes his sword from its sheath and severs the ear of a soldier (Matthew 26:51). Jesus miraculously healed the soldier's ear and was led away, captive. I'm from the hood and what Peter did was beyond noble! That's the kind of stuff you want to see from the homies, right?!? It is. Problem with it was that Peter had acted upon what he had already been rebuked against doing (Matthew 16:23). Jesus even called him a stumbling block, in that rebuke.

Why is this important? Well, Peter was bent on stopping Jesus from laying down His life (Matthew 16:22). But in reality, that's why Jesus had even come to earth. The same Peter to whom flesh and blood had not revealed Jesus status as "son of the living God" was later rebuked as an offence to the Savior's purpose.

What about Judas, though? We don't like him! He's the bad guy in the midst of the real brothers, right? Until last weekend, I thought the same. Then I was gifted this revelation: Judas made sure that Jesus fulfilled His life's purpose. He walked with Jesus, he knew Jesus' plans and apparently His whereabouts well enough to lead the soldiers to Gethsemane to apprehend him.

While most of us would clamor for Peter, I want to introduce an appreciation for Judas. Peter could have interrupted the plan for salvation (Matthew 26:56), but Judas was key to making it happen. Ruminate on that for a minute...

Think about this, what if Peter by attacking the soldier had been apprehended with Jesus also? He would have thrown off the course of history! Jesus was tried alone, as He should have been. And He was, thanks to His miraculous re-attachment of the soldier's ear.

What does this mean to us? I'll share a portion of the notes I jotted down the other day.

  • Peter tried to keep Jesus from fulfilling his destiny. Judas made sure that he would, by betrayal. Thank you Judas, for being committed to the task, Judas.
  • Peter was closer to Jesus, still he misunderstood His purpose. Watch out for Peter…he means well, but he will misunderstand your purpose. He will derail you on your way to fulfilling your life's purpose.
  • Conversely, Judas will hand you an experience only Romans 8:28 can explain.
  • Judas serves a purpose. Peter may hinder you from purpose!
  • Jesus healed the soldier’s ear because it was for HIM to experience the cross, alone. What if Peter had been taken into custody along with Jesus?
  • Be careful of the people who are unwittingly attaching themselves to your destiny. They can’t go where only you are designed to go!
  • Jesus healed the soldier’s ear and nobody stopped to marvel at the fact that Jesus healed him…why is that?!?

This Is NOT the Time to End Testimony Service

1/2/2018

Let's face it, some of us have been delivered from some dastardly deeds! There is a somewhat viral video going around of a woman testifying. Her testimony seemed to reach into the bowels of her past but before she could continue, she was cut off. Here are my thoughts on that:

About that testimony gone wrong…
Originally, I agreed to end her time at the mic. Then I thought about it...because we’re testifying we want people to know the real goodness of the Lord...even the ugly truth.

Still, there’s a tactful way to say even the most salacious things. So I would have taken the mic and asked her to sum it up if she could. I would’ve interviewed her at the mic (though her responses probably wouldn’t have changed).

Also, this is a great time to teach exactly how to tell a testimony in church. It’s easy to do away with it altogether, but when it’s done right it serves a great purpose whether told in church, on social media or person to person.

Pastor Robert Thibodeau has written a pamphlet about testifying in church. These are his pointers bout properly testifying in public.

To be frank, the church did the right thing. In a mixed audience, the church bears the responsibility of protecting the innocence and integrity of everyone in attendance. Ending the testimony was the right thing to do.

As stated above, This is the perfect opportunity for that church and the church at large to refine the art of the testimony. It’s not just a service time filler or devotional, but it is the final report of the Lord as mentioned in Isaiah 53. It is our way of doing as Jesus commanded Peter to “strengthen the brethren”.

In fact, Jesus commanded testimony in the case of the demoniac (Luke 8:39) and upon encountering Jesus, the woman at the well evangelized the city of Samaria (John 4:29) telling them about her encounter with Jesus. She was a woman with a "history", but the people listened and were converted.

Some churches utilize testimonies online, some are in bulletins or as part of the on-screen presentation, and others are shared randomly as the leader is led.

One of the elements of discipleship that is often mishandled is the admonition Jesus gave to: “learn of me” in Matthew 11:29. We are commissioned to go and make disciples, but disciples don’t make themselves. The element of instruction is just as vital as preaching. In fact if don’t take time to “teach” (Matthew 28:20), how can we be sure that the "listeners" ever learn?

This is not the time to stop testifying, but definitely time to be sure that we are teaching!

YES, I'm a believer!

I've recently encountered an onslaught of thought groups and religious systems that want to challenge my belief in Christ as Lord and Savior of my life. Most surprisingly, it has come from other black people. Whether they are Hebrew Israelites or whatever this new branch of blacks who choose the Hebrew lifestyle are, they're out there.

I've been perplexed by the idea of taking on the law, Torah as they call it. Jesus came to fulfill the law and eliminate the penalty of sin, so why are we observing days and moons, again?!? Some of them believe that black people are the Chosen People of Israel. To that I say, that's interesting and if we are...at what point do we feel shame about killing the Savior of the world. God's son we're talking about, here! I mean, read the bible, those were the same people that said "Free Barrabas".

I don't think I'd wear that as a badge of honor, friends! Also, from reading the bible, I also understand that Christ made a relationship with God possible with everyone-to provoke "us" to jealousy! Not to worry, because these gentiles would turn away from the Lord just like "we" did and He'll be ours again, right?! (Romans 7,8)/

The other group of people seem to be works based believers who believe that under grace, we are failing God. They observe feasts, the diet, holy days and moons like the people in the Old Testament. But why?And don't even get me started on the folks that won't even write out the name of God. G-D???? What does that mean? In essence, we aren't worthy to call him God or write out His name. But, the bible tells me about the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba Father (Romans 8:15). So, miss me with the dry, no relationship having spiritual junk, ok!

These people miss the very essence of Christ's sacrifice. It's to restore us unto God, Himself. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture (Psalm 100:3)! He wanted us back, so He sent us a sacrifice in the form of His son, Jesus.

To that I say emphatically: YES, I'm a believer!

Acts 15:5-12

5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
